  1. In the capital of Netherlands, there are 165 canals with 1281 bridges and 80 in the city centre, with so many canals it is nicknamed Venice of the North.






2. There are over 1500 bars and cafes in Amsterdam.






3. They love their bikes, there are over 813,562 people living in the city with an estimated 1 million bikes!






4. About 30,000 bikes dumped into the canals per year.






5. It is sinking! Due to the wet soil underneath, some buildings are lopsided. Homes are built on wooden poles and an average home would sit on 5 to 10 support poles. The city has about 11 million support poles in total. To combat the sinking issue they are beginning to be changed to concrete.






6. Its canal is home to 2500 houseboats. You can stay in a houseboat hotel or visit the houseboat museum but most are residential.






7. Pet power! Amsterdam cares about is animals, locals on low incomes are entitled to take their pets to the vet for free once a year.







8. Dutch are some of the tallest people in the world, average height for men is 184cm and women 170cm.







9. Women outnumber men, for every 100 men there are 145 women.







10. They used to have a wall built around the city. It was used during the middle ages to defend the city however was torn down in the 19th century. But you can still see some of the remaining wall today.
